What generator failure actually costs you
For a logistics operator, a failed transfer means cold storage climbing, a gate system that will not lift and a terminal operating system that goes dark mid shift. For a hospital or clinic, it means theatre and ICU load sitting on UPS batteries with a runtime measured in minutes. For a shopping centre, it means tenants closing tills and a landlord answering for it.
The generator itself is rarely the expensive part of that event. The expensive part is everything downstream of it.
This is the reason we treat generator servicing as a reliability contract rather than an oil change. The question we answer for you is not whether the machine runs. It is whether it will carry your actual load, on the day it matters, without human intervention.
Generator servicing in Durban
Scheduled servicing is the cheapest reliability you will ever buy. A minor service on a well kept machine costs a fraction of a single emergency call-out, and a fraction of a fraction of an engine rebuild.
Minor service covers engine oil and filter replacement, fuel filter replacement, air filter inspection or replacement, coolant level and concentration check, belt tension and condition, starting battery test under load, terminal cleaning and torque check, control panel fault log review, and a supervised start and run test.
Major service adds coolant system flush and refill, injector and fuel system inspection, valve clearance check where the engine calls for it, alternator bearing inspection, full control panel calibration, transfer switch operation test, and a load test to verify the set carries rated output.
Service intervals are set by running hours and by calendar, whichever falls first. For most standby sets in commercial use in KZN that means a minor service every six months and a major service annually. Sets in coastal locations on the Bluff, in the harbour precinct or along the North Coast run tighter intervals because salt air attacks terminals, connections and enclosures far faster than inland conditions.
Generator repairs and emergency call-out
When a set fails, the diagnosis matters more than the speed. Replacing a starting battery on a machine that is actually losing charge through a failed charging alternator buys you three weeks and the same failure again.

Generator load testing
A generator that starts is not a generator that works. Most standby sets in South Africa spend their lives doing weekly no load test runs, which prove the engine turns over and prove almost nothing else. Running a diesel set unloaded for years causes wet stacking, where unburnt fuel and carbon build up in the exhaust and cylinders and progressively destroy the engine.
Load testing puts the set under real electrical load and holds it there. It proves the engine, the alternator, the fuel system, the cooling system and the controller all perform together at rated output, and it burns off the deposits that idle running leaves behind.
We carry out load bank testing to verify rated output, step load testing to prove the set holds voltage and frequency when large loads switch in, and full building load transfer testing to prove the whole chain from grid failure to generator acceptance to UPS handover works as designed.
For any site running critical load, we recommend an annual load test as a minimum and a documented result kept on file.
Generator and UPS together, from one accountable contractor
Most sites we walk into have a generator maintained by one contractor and a UPS maintained by another, with a transfer switch in between that nobody owns. When the site drops, both contractors arrive and each proves their equipment was fine.
We take the whole chain. Grid, transfer switch, generator, UPS, batteries and the load. One contract, one number to call, one party accountable for the outcome. Frequently asked questions
How often should a standby generator be serviced?
Every six months or at the running hour interval specified by the manufacturer, whichever comes first, with a major service annually. Coastal sites in Durban should not stretch these intervals because salt air accelerates corrosion on terminals and connections.
Is a weekly test run enough?
No. A no load test run proves the engine starts. It does not prove the set will carry your load, and running unloaded for extended periods causes wet stacking, which damages the engine over time. An annual load test is the minimum for any site carrying critical load.
