Battery Impedance Testing in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal

A UPS battery bank does not warn you before it fails. It sits at the correct float voltage, the display shows no alarm, and the system reports healthy right up until the grid drops and the bank collapses in under a minute.

Impedance testing is how you find that out in advance instead of afterwards. We test UPS battery banks across Durban, KZN and nationally, at block level, with trended results and a written report you can budget against.

Why a voltage reading tells you almost nothing

This is the single most misunderstood thing in standby power.

A battery block holds its float voltage almost until the end of its usable life. A block with severe internal degradation, dried out electrolyte, plate corrosion or a failing internal connection will still read 13.5 volts on a multimeter while it is on charge, because the charger is holding it there.

Voltage tells you the state of charge. It does not tell you the capacity. And capacity is the only thing you actually care about, because capacity is runtime.

Internal impedance is different. It rises measurably as a block degrades, long before voltage moves. Track impedance over time and you can see a block failing months or years before it takes the string down with it.

One bad block takes the whole string

Blocks in a UPS battery string are wired in series. The string can only deliver what its weakest block can deliver.

One failing block in a string of forty does not reduce your runtime by one fortieth. It can reduce it to nothing, because when that block collapses under load the whole string voltage drops below the inverter's cut-off and the UPS shuts down.

This is why testing the string voltage is worthless and testing every block is essential. It is also why we test every block, every time, and record every reading.

What our testing covers

Block level impedance measurement on every block in the bank, using calibrated instrumentation.

Block level voltage under float and, where appropriate, under load.

Terminal and connection resistance, because a loose or corroded intercell connector produces heat, voltage drop and eventually a fire risk, and it will not show on a block reading.

Thermal inspection of the bank, connections and terminals.

Physical condition assessment covering case swelling, terminal corrosion, electrolyte leakage and post seal condition.

Ambient temperature and ventilation assessment, because heat is the single largest driver of battery degradation. Every ten degrees Celsius above the rated operating temperature roughly halves the design life of a VRLA battery. A bank rated for five years in a controlled room will give you around two and a half in a hot cupboard.

Trending against previous results, which is where the real value is. A single set of impedance readings tells you the current state. Two sets tell you the direction and the rate. Three sets let you forecast the replacement date and put it in a budget.

How often should a bank be tested

For most commercial UPS installations in KZN, impedance testing every six months is the appropriate interval, moving to quarterly for banks that are past the halfway point of their design life or that sit in poorly controlled environments.

Coastal sites around Durban harbour, the Bluff and the North Coast should not stretch these intervals. Salt air attacks terminals and connections aggressively.

Testing is included as standard in our service level agreements, which is the arrangement most of our clients settle on, because it converts battery replacement from an unplanned outage into a scheduled line item.

When testing says replace

Replacing a battery bank is a significant cost and it is the largest single expense in the life of a UPS system. Doing it on evidence rather than on a calendar guess saves money in both directions: you do not replace a bank that has three good years left, and you do not run one that has three good months left.

Where the bank has failed because of something else, a faulty charger, a hot room, a bad connection or a UPS that has been cycling the batteries repeatedly, we will find that too. Replacing a bank without fixing what killed it just buys you the same failure again on a new invoice.

Frequently asked questions

What is battery impedance testing?

It is a measurement of the internal resistance of each battery block. Internal impedance rises as a battery degrades internally, so it detects deterioration long before voltage readings show anything at all.

 

Why can I not just measure voltage?

Because a battery holds its float voltage almost until the moment it fails. Voltage shows state of charge, not capacity. A bank can read perfectly and still deliver under a minute of runtime.

How long does a test take?

It depends on the number of blocks. A typical commercial bank of thirty to eighty blocks is usually a few hours on site, and the system stays in service throughout.

Do you have to shut the UPS down to test?

No. Impedance testing is carried out with the bank in service.

 

How often should we test?

Every six months for most commercial installations, quarterly for older banks or hot environments.

 

What does it cost?
