Real off-grid autonomy requires two or more days of storage. Since the battery is the most expensive component of any system, this is where costs can escalate quickly.
3. Your Peak Simultaneous Load
The inverter must be rated to handle everything you might switch on at once. This includes your geyser, kettle, pool pump, and oven, all without the grid to help manage the load spikes.
The Trap: Oversizing the Battery
Many customers who want to "never pay Eskom again" fall into this trap. To cover a rare four-day grey stretch using solar and battery alone, you would need an enormous battery bank. This much storage is extremely expensive and often sits idle for most of the year, waiting for a worst-case scenario that happens only a few times a season. True off-grid makes sense in three situations: your grid supply is unreliable or unavailable, the fixed monthly charges in your area are excessive, or you want full independence badly enough to pay for it.
