Solar Finance South Africa

Solar Finance in Durban and KZN

You have seen the quotes. The panels, the inverter, the batteries, the installation, and suddenly a system that pays for itself in a few years needs a lump sum you would rather keep in the business. That upfront figure is the single biggest reason good solar projects stall in KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa. It has nothing to do with whether solar makes sense for you, because it almost always does. The real question is how you pay for it without locking up cash you need for stock, salaries, or growth. That is what this page is about. Speak to us on 031 100 2679 or email service@powerinfrastructure.co.za and we will show you how to get the system installed while keeping your capital where it works hardest.

Mtshali Power Electronics & Infrastructure is an installer, not a lender. What we do is design and build a system that finance providers are comfortable funding, then help you access the right finance structure for your situation through registered lenders. The result is the same either way: solar on your roof, load-shedding off your books, and a monthly figure that in many cases sits below what you already pay Eskom or your municipality.

Affordability is the real barrier, not the technology

The technology question was settled years ago. Solar works, it lasts, and in KZN it pays back quickly. The barrier that stops most businesses and homeowners is the upfront cost, and the whole finance industry knows it. That is exactly why the major banks have built dedicated solar finance products: to turn one large payment into a manageable monthly one.

Financing changes the maths in your favour. Instead of a single large outlay, you carry a predictable monthly cost and start saving on your electricity bill from day one. When your energy saving is close to or above the monthly repayment, the system effectively funds itself while you keep your cash. For a business that runs during daylight hours, which describes most warehouses, workshops, offices, and retail, the daytime solar yield lines up almost perfectly with your consumption. You are simply swapping a rising grid bill for a fixed repayment on an asset you eventually own outright.

Backed by relationships with South Africa's major Banks

Here is the part most installers cannot offer. The banks do not install solar. They lend against a system built by an installer they trust, and every major solar finance product in the country runs through an approved installer panel. Before a bank releases finance, it wants an installation quote from an accredited supplier, proper documentation, and confidence that the system is compliant and will be maintained.

That is where MPEI sits. We have spent years building the track record, the documentation standards, and the professional credibility that finance providers and financial institutions look for. When a lender sees an MPEI proposal, they see a registered business, Level 1 B-BBEE, with a Certificate of Compliance path, a maintenance plan, and a history of doing the work properly. That is what turns a finance application from a question mark into an easy approval.

Practically, that means we help you access the same kinds of structures the big banks offer, including asset finance, home-loan-linked finance, business energy loans, and rent-to-own, through registered providers. You are never dealing with a fly-by-night quoting a number on a WhatsApp voice note. You are dealing with the installer the finance side already respects.

Finance options we help you access

There is no single "solar finance" product. There are several structures, and the right one depends on your cash flow, your tax position, and whether you want to own the system or simply pay for the power.

Asset finance and instalment sale

The most common route for businesses that want to own the system. A registered finance provider funds the installation and you repay over a fixed term, typically three to eight years, after which the system is fully yours. Because solar equipment is a productive asset with a clear depreciation and resale profile, lenders are generally comfortable funding a properly specified installation. Our job is to specify and document the system so it qualifies cleanly.

Home-loan-linked finance

For homeowners, the cheapest money is usually your bond. Solar finance added to a home loan carries a home-loan interest rate rather than a personal-loan rate, and the installation lifts your property value at the same time. We prepare the quote and documentation your bank needs to add it on.

Business energy loans

Registered businesses can access dedicated energy loans that fund commercial solar and backup systems, often with flexible terms and, in some cases, a capital holiday at the start. These suit larger installations where the savings and the continuity benefit justify a multi-year commitment.

Rent-to-own, operating lease, and PPA

Rent-to-own suits businesses that want eventual ownership but prefer a rental structure during the term. An operating lease keeps the system off your balance sheet and treats the payment as an operating expense. Under a Power Purchase Agreement, a third party owns and maintains the system on your roof and you simply buy the power it generates, usually below your current tariff, with no upfront cost. Which one fits depends on your accountant's advice and your consumption profile, and we will lay them out against your numbers.

What the monthly maths looks like

An illustration, so the numbers are not abstract. Take a mid-sized business hybrid system. Financed over a typical term, the repayment might sit in a similar range to your current monthly electricity spend. From month one, the solar offsets a large share of your daytime consumption, so your grid bill drops. The gap between what you were paying the grid and what you now pay in repayment plus a smaller grid bill is your net position, and it improves every year as tariffs rise and your repayment stays fixed. Once the term ends, the repayment falls away entirely and the full saving is yours, on a system built to keep running for years afterward.

Those figures are illustrative only. Actual interest rates, terms, and repayments come from your registered finance provider and depend on your affordability and credit profile. What we control is the part that makes the numbers work: a correctly sized system, built to last, that a lender is happy to fund.

How the process works

We keep this simple and off your plate as much as possible.

First, we do a proper site assessment and design, sizing the system to your actual consumption using a KZN coastal baseline rather than an optimistic inland figure, so the numbers on the quote match the numbers on your roof.

Second, we prepare a documented, finance-ready proposal that a lender can work with. This is the piece most installers skip, and it is the piece that gets you approved.

Third, we help you take that proposal to the right finance structure through registered providers, and you choose the one that suits your cash flow.

Fourth, once finance is in place, we install, commission, and issue your Certificate of Compliance, then hand you onto a maintenance plan through our solar maintenance and SLA offering so the system keeps performing for its full service life.

The equipment we specify

Finance runs over years, so the equipment has to last years. We specify for a ten-year service life, not the cheapest components that clear the quote and fail in year three. For inverters we work with are first tie products and our lithium batteries are C1/1C rated. This matters for finance as much as for reliability. A lender is funding an asset, and an asset that fails halfway through the term is a problem for everyone. Building the system to last protects your repayment, your savings, and your peace of mind. Frequently asked questions

Does MPEI provide the finance directly?

No. MPEI is a solar installer, not a registered credit provider. We design and install the system and help you access finance through registered third-party providers such as banks, asset finance houses, and PPA operators. You deal with the finance provider for the credit itself, and with us for the system.

Can my solar system really pay for itself while I finance it?

Yes. When your monthly electricity saving is close to or above your monthly repayment, the system effectively covers its own finance cost while you keep your capital. Whether that holds for you depends on your consumption pattern, your tariff, and the finance term, which is exactly what we work out during the assessment.

Which finance options can you help me access?

We help you access asset finance, home-loan-linked finance, business energy loans, and rent-to-own or PPA structures through registered providers. The right one depends on whether you want to own the system, how you want it treated on your books, and your cash flow.

Why does it matter that MPEI is an established installer?

Every major solar finance product routes through an approved installer panel. Lenders want a professional design, correct documentation, a compliance certificate, and a maintenance path before they release funds. Our track record and documentation standards are what make applications go through smoothly.

What documents does a finance provider need?

Typically a professional system design, a detailed quote, proof of the installer's credentials, and confirmation that the installation will be compliant and maintained. We prepare all of the technical documentation.

How long does the whole process take?

Site assessment and design are quick, usually within a few days of your call. The finance approval timeline depends on your provider. Once finance is confirmed, installation and commissioning follow on an agreed schedule.

Get the system without the lump sum

Solar should not wait until you have saved up the full amount, because every month you wait is another month of rising grid costs and load-shedding risk. Let us design a system that finance providers are happy to fund, help you choose the structure that fits your cash flow, and get it installed and protected under a maintenance plan.

Call MPEI on 031 100 2679 or email service@powerinfrastructure.co.za for a site assessment and a finance-ready proposal.
