UPS RENTAL

UPS Rental and Hire in South Africa

Sometimes you need protected power for six weeks, not six years. Renting a UPS puts a commissioned, tested system on your site without a capital request, a depreciation schedule or a ten year maintenance commitment.

We rent single and three phase UPS systems from Durban, across KwaZulu-Natal and nationally, delivered, installed, commissioned and supported for as long as you need them.

Call 031 100 2679 or email service@powerinfrastructure.co.za.

When renting makes more sense than buying

Your UPS has failed and the replacement has a lead time. This is the most common reason people call us. A three phase unit can carry a twelve week import lead time. A rental unit closes that gap the same week, so your load is protected while the permanent system is on the water.

You are running a temporary site. Construction site offices, event infrastructure, temporary control rooms, mobile clinics and outside broadcast all need protected power for a defined period and none of them justify a capital purchase.

You are doing planned electrical work. Board upgrades, transformer replacements, generator installations and shutdowns all need the critical load supported while the permanent supply is disturbed.

You need to prove a case before you spend. Renting a unit for a season lets you measure real load, real runtime and real behaviour before committing to a specification. Several clients have rented, measured, and then bought a smaller system than they originally planned.

Capital is the constraint, not the requirement. Rental sits in operating expenditure rather than capital expenditure, which for many organisations is the difference between doing it this quarter and doing it next financial year.

Seasonal or peak cover. Retailers through the festive trading period, agricultural processing through a harvest window, and any operation with a defined high risk season.

What we rent

Single phase rack mount and tower units for comms rooms, racks, access control, CCTV and point of sale.

Three phase systems for server rooms, plant, process load and full building critical circuits.

Extended battery capacity where the application needs more runtime than a standard configuration provides.

Distribution and cabling, maintenance bypass arrangements and monitoring, supplied as part of the rental rather than as an afterthought you have to source separately.

Where the application also needs backup generation, we can co-ordinate the whole chain. See generator services.

What is included

Every rental includes delivery to site, positioning and electrical connection, full commissioning with recorded readings, battery bank verification before handover, operator briefing for your site staff, and support for the full rental term including fault attendance.

At the end of the term we decommission and remove the equipment. If you decide to keep it, we will quote you a purchase price against what you have already paid in rental.

You are not renting a box off a shelf. You are renting a working, commissioned, supported system.

Working out what you actually need to rent

Three numbers determine everything, and if you can give us all three on the phone we can usually quote the same day.

The load in kW or kVA. Not the nameplate rating on the equipment, which is almost always far higher than what the equipment actually draws. If you do not know your real load, we can measure it, or we can work it back from your distribution board. As a rough guide, a rack of standard server and network equipment typically draws far less than the sum of its power supply ratings suggests.

The runtime you need in minutes. This is where most people over specify and pay for it. Ask yourself what the UPS is actually for. If it exists to ride through short grid dips and to shut systems down cleanly, ten to fifteen minutes is plenty. If it has to carry the load until a generator starts and accepts, five minutes is often enough. If it has to carry the site with no generator behind it for an hour, that is a very different and much more expensive battery bank. Runtime is the single biggest driver of rental cost.

The term. One week reads very differently to twelve months on a rate card.

Two other things worth telling us: whether there is a generator on site, because that changes the configuration, and what the room is like, because a rental unit put into an unventilated space will run hot and derate.

Rental terms

Short term rental runs from one week upward, and suits shutdowns, events, emergency cover and lead time gaps.

Long term rental from six months upward is normally the better option where the requirement is ongoing but the capital case is difficult, and long term rates are considerably lower per month than short term.

Rate depends on unit size, runtime required, term length, site location and whether extended battery capacity is needed. We quote in writing with everything itemised.

Call 031 100 2679 and tell us the load, the runtime and the term, and we will come back with a number.

Coverage

We deliver and commission directly across Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, Richards Bay, Pietermaritzburg and the North and South Coast.

Nationally we deliver and commission on project work including Gauteng, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape, either with our own technicians or through vetted partners working under our accountability. The rental contract and the responsibility stay with us.

Rent now, or fix it properly

A rental is often the right answer for six weeks and the wrong answer for six years. If your existing system has failed, the more useful question is why.

We can rent you a unit to protect the load this week and, in parallel, do a proper assessment of what failed and what it will cost to put right. That way you are not making a capital decision in a panic. See UPS repairs and UPS installation.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can you deliver a rental UPS?

For common single phase and smaller three phase units in the Durban area we can usually be on site within a day or two subject to availability. Larger three phase requirements depend on the unit. Call 031 100 2679 and we will tell you what we can actually do rather than what you want to hear.

What is the minimum rental period? One week. Rates improve significantly on longer terms.

Is installation included in the rental? Yes. Delivery, positioning, connection, commissioning and removal at the end of the term are all included, and quoted up front.

Can we buy the unit at the end of the rental? Yes. We will quote a purchase price that takes rental already paid into account.

Do you rent UPS systems outside KZN?

Yes, nationally, on project terms.

What happens if the rental unit faults?

It is our unit and our responsibility. Fault attendance is included for the full rental term.

Can you rent a generator as well? Talk to us about the whole requirement. Where a site needs both, we would rather co-ordinate it than have you manage two contractors. See generator services in Durban.
